Things I Love Thursday

It’s Thanksgiving~ If we celebrated it here, which we don’t unfortunately or we would have an extra public holiday and who doesn’t love public holidays? Now I have to wait till December to get a break off work.

So what’s so awesome about Thanksgiving despite not living in the US? Well, Black Friday/Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday sales, of course! :D I’m already making a list of things to buy from all the indie stores. Black Friday, should be renamed to Broke Friday, you know? I specifically paid off my credit card bill the other day to ensure that I could buy all the things~

And speaking of buying things, my Sixteen92 samples just came in! I got samples from the two new collections, the Hot Chocolate Bar collection and the Winter collection.

My bottle of Swarm was missing but a quick exchange with Claire settled things easily~ I will definitely be making another purchase soon because she has some great deals for her Black Friday sales.

I had my first Toffee Nut Latte of the year~ and idk, Christmas Cookie Latte seems kind of weird to me, will it taste like cookie dough?

I rarely read Buzzfeed articles because most of the time, they’re pretty crappy, but this one? Is freaking cute, and this is coming from a person who doesn’t even like kids 99.1% of the time.

Seeing Ramsay’s gentler, helpful side is reason alone to watch. But the kids are the real stars because they (and the producers in the control room) turn the reality cooking show on its head by making it more heartwarming than cutthroat — they actually are here to make friends. They are more than happy to lend one another ingredients and help during the challenges. They often cry when anyone is sent home because they are sad for their friend. They release piercing screams of delight when a food for the next challenge is revealed (“Yaaaay! Pancakes!”), and collapse on the floor with relief when they aren’t sent home. And there is a visual spectacle: They have to jump to reach ingredients in the pantry and stand on boxes to cook at the counters; the scale is off. Meanwhile, the dishes they make are very impressive and just messy enough to be believable. Basically, everything they do and say is ridiculous, and yet it makes so much more sense than what adults do on television.

I can count on one hand how many shoujo series I have watched and completed and I’m thinking I can add Toradora to this very limited list~ Officially titled Tiger x Dragon, this is a high school anime with elements of romance and comedy, revolving around a bunch of teenagers. The two main characters are Taiga and Ryuuji, hence the title being Tiger x Dragon. Taiga has a crush on Ryuuji’s best friend, and Ryuuji has a crush on Taiga’s best friend, and so hijinks ensue as the two of them try to confess to each other’s best friends…

If you notice that I haven’t been around much on Twitter or even on my blog and you’re wondering why, well, wonder no more. Because my sordid secret is… I have been playing Sims 4 since last week and well… I probably have spent too much time on it already, but still. I’m invested in my Sims’ lives, okay. And I think I will probably play through the next couple of weeks before getting bored and moving onto something else – Steam sales are coming up too~ :D

go awaaaaay

Brace yourself… work is going to be super busy soon.

Firstly, a whole bunch of people are going on leave, and since they’re lowly executives, we have to take over their duties. The guy I’m supposed to be covering? Will be away for one entire month because he’s going for a major surgery and it’s probably going to take him that long to recover. Another two will be away for two weeks and I am not looking forward to covering their workload because they have a lot of work and it’s all finance stuff, which basically makes me loopy and restless and I end up wanting to set everything on fire.

Also I do not appreciate that one person who keeps on walking here and there and checking up on us and calling for useless meetings just to show people that she’s doing work. Like, fuck, you’re not adding any value here, okay? You’re just annoying people with your own hypocritical ways and you know, I’m going to enjoy not seeing you for an entire month too. (Hilariously, no one was asked to cover her duties because does she even have any duties? It’s like the people under her are on the ball while she’s barely in the loop most of the time.)

Well, for now, I have to smile and pretend to be a good subordinate while I grit my teeth and practice my own brand of hypocrisy because I have a working sense of self-preservation and I need the money.

Maybe I’m just a paranoid person who jumps at shadows and twitches at strange sounds, but I don’t trust authority figures. I don’t trust them to do the right thing or to be impartial all the time. Why? Because everyone is human and we all have our own innate prejudices and opinions, no matter how much we think we have stifled them. I know personally that I can be extremely biased at times and how hard it can be to do the right thing, so unless the people in charge are saints or inhuman creatures with no emotions, then well, I normally see the worse in people so I won’t have to feel disappointed when they inevitably fuck things up.

When can we start equipping police officers with those body cameras? It would help some, I would think, if the police officers are held accountable for their actions. I remember there was an incident where some police officers basically kicked a homeless man to death a couple of years back, and you know what? Despite a video showing their crime, they get off scot-free. Like, WTF?! I’m not saying that body cameras are going to solve the problems, but at least it’s a start. And if the police officers erase incriminating footage from the camera? Then punish them heavily and think ‘guilty before proven innocent’ because that seems to be the mentality that they take with people anyway. *shrug*

The issues ongoing in Ferguson annoys the hell out of me. I’m not saying that either party is right or wrong to take certain action because after all, the victim is dead and he cannot give us his side of the story and we all know how easily facts and evidence can be manipulated, people can be bought. To go into an awkward segue, there was this one news headline that pissed me the fuck off because one kid’s lie put a man in prison for 39 fucking years.

But still, whatever it is, looting and rioting isn’t the right way to go, because you know what, it’s a tragedy that people have lost their son, and you’re using that as an excuse to loot shops and create havoc on the pretext of speaking up for justice? Well, that’s just shameless.

And then there was the not-that-recent news where bankers collaborated to manipulate the world’s foreign exchange rates to make a profit for themselves and the banks were only fined 4 billion plus collectively. Seriously, that’s like a slap to the wrist for these banks whose profit margins in a single quarter would exceed the fines easily. And who still gets fucked in the end? The banks’ customers, duh. I’m sure the bankers think we’re all fucking idiots and we ought to be fleeced of our money, right?

Sure, white collar crime doesn’t cause any physical damage to anyone directly, but the area of effect is huge. The average guy on the street can whack a person and fuck up his life, but the guy in the suit? Can fuck up hundreds of lives or even more with just one action. And you know what, these people seldom go to prison, or even if they do, they probably go to one of those fancy ones where it’s more like a holiday than a punishment.

Call me a cynic, but that’s what the world wants you to be, isn’t it?

BPAL; Love in the Asylum

Based on Dylan Thomas’ poem of the same name.

A stranger has come
To share my room in the house not right in the head,
A girl mad as birds

Bolting the night of the door with her arm her plume.
Strait in the mazed bed
She deludes the heaven-proof house with entering clouds

Yet she deludes with walking the nightmarish room,
At large as the dead,
Or rides the imagined oceans of the male wards.

She has come possessed
Who admits the delusive light through the bouncing wall,
Possessed by the skies

She sleeps in the narrow trough yet she walks the dust
Yet raves at her will
On the madhouse boards worn thin by my walking tears.

And taken by light in her arms at long and dear last
I may without fail
Suffer the first vision that set fire to the stars.

A song of love and madness: two roses, tolu balsam and ambergris with vanilla, labdanum, tobacco leaf, carnation and tonka.

Some say that this poem eloquently sums up the tumultuous relationship the poet had with his wife, Caitlin Thomas. Their marriage was supposedly a stormy one, fuelled by affairs and alcohol, and described by Dylan Thomas as ‘raw, red bleeding meat’. After the poet’s death, she took her children and eventually relocated to Italy until her death in 1994. She was then buried next to Dylan in Wales, a request that surprised her family.

Upon application, I get the strong sweetness of rose entwined with the spiciness of carnations. The sweetness is underscored by a sharp sourness, and slowly the scent unfolds itself to a more powdery note, with a slight hint of greenness underneath, reducing the overwhelmingly heady presence of the roses. There’s also a slight smoky quality to the scent after it has rested a little on the skin, probably brought on by the tobacco leaf and the labdanum notes.

The drydown is creamy, and almost sweeter, without the contrast of the spicy aspects of the carnations. This is where the resins come into play, ambergris and tolu balsam.

Overall, Love in the Aslyum has an amazingly strong projection, especially during the opening, which lasts around half an hour. It also has quite a long wear time, clocking at least 6 hours on my wrists.

I’m so glad I took the risk and blind bought a full bottle of this :D Because goddamn, it is a beautiful scent.

new wallpaper~

(no source because I found this on reddit and the credits led to a Japanese 404 (??) page that I couldn’t understand.)

I had to re-download the whole of Gintama season 3 because the old files in hard disk weren’t working, IDK why… maybe they got corrupted or something but I couldn’t even get into the folder, so the easiest way out, was to simply delete everything and re-download it again. And since the whole series was just sitting in my hard disk alongside all the things I haven’t watched, why not start rewatching it? Right? Because why watch the things I haven’t watched, that would be boooooring. *headdesk*

Things I Love Thursday

One more day to the weekend where we can all relax. Except not really because there are still people who have to work on the weekends. Like me. Why, cruel deity, why.

Real Life
Met up with some of the old temps to celebrate a birthday~ We went to eat at Saboten, a Japanese restaurant that serves mainly tonkatsu dishes, though I had salmon instead, haha. But yeah, I love hanging out with this two crazy kids because one of so deadpan, the other is a total cloud cuckoolander :D

Also I have enlisted the help of various groups of friends to help me with one momentous task: 海賊王に俺はなる! *ahem* I mean, I will catch them all! Oh wait. That’s not it either. Hopefully with One Piece’s popularity, the McDonalds’ here will be more willing to bring in more anime related toys :D

Slacking at work = awesome~ But… January will be a killer because one of the executives will be away for an entire month because of medical reasons. For now, we just hide away in a corner and pretend to study. Yup. If my bosses see this, I’m dead.

Went to watch Bill Bailey on Monday~ It was hilarious and so fun and I love the fact that I was freaking close to the stage. Close enough to see his expressions clearly, which was why I bought a good ticket. Because after watching so many stand up comedians performing on Youtube, I know that expressions can be really important in creating an overall experience, so of course I forked the money out.

Hopefully they bring in other comedians as well – there are so many that I’d pay to watch live!

Then there was the London Symphony Orchestra as well. While the pianist for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 was not the most amazing performer out there, I thought he had really good technical skills and the orchestra was really fantastic. Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is a favourite of mine – to me, it really runs through the whole gamut of emotions; it opens with a tense series of chords that reminds one of heavy church bells, then comes the running passages that intensifies the highly charged atmosphere but you can hear how it remains in control, as though the aggression is restrained, only just barely. Then slowly the lyrical movement comes, moving gracefully and less agitated until the last part when you think the theme is returning, only not.

Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3 was a thing of beauty as well, the sound beautifully crafted by the LSO, the concertmaster’s violin was simply wondrous and I enjoyed the percussion section as well.

I have also been rewatching Leverage… while I play Bejeweled 3 because I need sound in the background. (No the sound effects in-game doesn’t count). But yeah, I missed the banter! And the fun heists that the team pull! :D

Material Goods
A bunch of things arrived this week :D and I love it! But I think the post people hate me more and more with every package that enters my mailbox. I’m sorry, postal workers!

First up, I got my Kickstarter book~ The second book in the Littlest Lovecraft series: The Dunwich Horror. Plus a set of postcards and a glossy print as well as a bookmark and a ex libris sticker to paste on the front page.

And there’s this set of Whipped Lip Butters from Live Beautifully Body on Etsy. They’re not the most moisturizing lip products on the market, but goddamn they are really fantastic to apply. It goes on cool, and melts on your lips and smells so delicious… unfortunately they do not taste delicious. They have a ton of flavours, and I got 4 of them: Raspberry & Vanilla, Root Beer & Vanilla, Hazelnut & Vanilla and Peach & Vanilla. They also threw in a mini sized lip balm as a freebie as well as a discount code for my next purchase.

Next one is from One Hand Washes the Other. The turnabout time for this one took almost forever – I ordered it last month and I think it took around 20 days or so before it shipped. But it’s okay, I wasn’t really in a rush for my products. As long as they turn up, I’m okay with waiting. Unless you wait forever and they never appear… then I’ll kick up a fuss.

But hey, remember the Solanum perfume that I reviewed during the mass Autumn/Halloween indie perfume reviews I did in October? Well, here’s the perfume oil version~ and I also got two other perfumes, which were inspired by the BBC Sherlock series, featuring our favourite detective and mastermind :D

OHWTO’s Holiday perfumes are up as well, and I’m thinking of getting a couple of things, but I’ll wait till the Black Friday sales “D because I’m cheap like that.

And lastly, the awesome Fyrinnae with their once in a blue moon sales. I ordered only a few things, mainly because I was at work and I had to teach piano in like half an hour and I couldn’t spend too much time browsing.

I love the cute little tubes that their trial lip lustres come in, it’s adorably compact and easy to bring around. Not that I wear a lot of makeup these days. No time, as the White Rabbit shouts, no time.

let’s all just play pinball on our laptops

why are some people really busy in the office?
because of bureaucracy inefficiency, seriously, it’s basically like being told to write a report about why you’re so busy when you’re already piled down with work and knowing that this report is just as useful as turd on a shoe and meant to be used as a placating device for the higher ups.

am I making sense? I hope so. but yeah, I’m not exactly very busy at work (at the moment) but I feel bad for the people who are. (they’re the ones in charge of showing us the ropes) and most of the time, they’re expected to do more useless work just because red tape says so.
